Photovoltaic Solar Energy as the first source of electricity in Spain

4,563 GWh generated are enough to make photovoltaic energy the largest source of electricity in Spain in May. This means that photovoltaic energy contributed 23.8% of the total generation mix during the month of May.

The truth is that this news makes all the sense in the world, especially considering that photovoltaic energy has experienced a remarkable development in Spain in recent years, consolidating itself as a key element in the country’s energy transition.

This growth is clearly reflected in the evolution of photovoltaic power generation in the months of May, a time of the year that, due to its long hours of sunshine and favorable weather conditions, is particularly representative for evaluating the performance of this technology.

Installed Capacity Growth

Since the early 2010s, Spain has seen a significant increase in installed PV capacity. This growth has accelerated especially since 2018, when the removal of regulatory barriers and the push for supportive policies began to encourage increased investment and new construction. In May 2024, Spain reached an installed capacity of close to 20 GW, compared to approximately 5 GW in 2018.

Photovoltaic Energy Production in May

May is an ideal month for photovoltaic generation in Spain due to high solar irradiation and generally favorable weather, with many hours of sunshine and moderate temperatures that optimize the performance of solar panels.

Production Data

In May 2023, PV production has reached record numbers increasing by more than 30% compared to May 2022 and by an impressive 200% compared to May 2018. This sustained growth reflects both the expansion in installed capacity and technological improvements in solar panel efficiency and energy management and storage systems.

Impact on the Power Grid

The integration of photovoltaic energy into the Spanish electricity grid has brought significant challenges and benefits. In May, high photovoltaic generation significantly reduces dependence on conventional energy sources, such as natural gas and coal, contributing to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions.

Variability Management

One of the most important challenges is managing the variability of PV production, as it depends on weather conditions. To address this challenge, several strategies have been implemented, such as improving energy storage infrastructure and developing smart grids. These technologies allow for greater flexibility and responsiveness in the grid, facilitating the integration of large volumes of renewable energy.

Featured Projects

In May 2024, several large-scale photovoltaic projects have started operating, especially in regions such as Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura, where solar irradiation is particularly high. These projects not only increase generation capacity, but also contribute to the local economy through job creation and infrastructure development.

Future Perspectives

The future of photovoltaic energy in Spain is promising. Forecasts indicate that installed capacity will continue to grow, driven by the decarbonization targets set out in the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) 2021-2030. This plan envisages reaching 39 GW of installed PV capacity by 2030, which will be a significant increase over current figures.

In addition, continued reductions in solar panel costs and improvements in technological efficiency are expected to continue to make PV an increasingly competitive and attractive option for investors and consumers.

The evolution of photovoltaic power generation in Spain during May reflects the notable progress and consolidation of this technology in the country’s energy mix. With a steadily increasing installed capacity and record production this month, photovoltaic energy is emerging as a key pillar for achieving the goals of sustainability and energy transition in Spain. The combination of favorable policies, investment in technology and efficient grid management augur a bright future for solar energy in the country.
