European electricity market reform and photovoltaic energy in Spain

Spain and the Valencian Community: A Solar Energy Boom in 2023
January 5, 2024

Renewables are enjoying a very sweet moment in Spain, already covering half of the electricity demand by 2023

Spain is undergoing a green revolution in its electricity production. This year, for the first time in history, more than half of the country’s electricity comes from renewable sources. The Spanish electricity system has achieved a significant milestone by generating more than 50% of its electricity from clean technology facilities, surpassing even the sum of nuclear power, gas plants and coal plants.

Here are the key aspects of this achievement:

  • Record production: So far this year, Spain has produced almost 125,300 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity, more than in any previous full year. This has been achieved thanks to the boom of new renewable plants throughout the country.
  • Weight of renewables: Renewable energies now account for 50.2% of all electricity generation in Spain. These data include both mainland Spain and the island regions (Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla).
  • Future target: The Government of Spain has an ambitious target of producing 80% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. This commitment is included in the draft of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) sent to the European Commission.
  • CO2 emissions: In addition, CO2-free electricity (combining renewables and nuclear) is also setting a record, reaching almost 72% of the total in 2023.

Until now, there have been months in which renewable generation has outperformed all others, but never before has the threshold of 50% renewable energy been exceeded in an entire year. This achievement is an important step towards a more sustainable and cleaner future for Spain.

In short, renewables are leading the way towards a greener energy matrix in Spain, and the country is demonstrating its commitment to the fight against climate change and the transition to a more sustainable economy.
