Why does Spain lead in photovoltaic energy?

Stationary Batteries and their Impact on the Photovoltaic Market

The stationary storage batteries are transforming the market and what are the benefits.  The global market for stationary storage batteries is expected to reach between $120 billion and $150 billion by 2030, more than double its current size.

Benefits of Stationary Batteries in the Photovoltaic Market

  1. Optimization of Self-consumption: The batteries allow the storage of surplus electricity generated by solar panels during the central hours of the day. This enables a 100% self-consumption   by using that energy during the morning or evening. Although the initial investment may be higher, the overall return increases significantly.
  2. Increased Sustainability: By not wasting surplus energy, photovoltaic production is maximized. This contributes to greater sustainability and reduces dependence on the grid.
  3. Grid stability: The large-scale battery projects in Spain, for example, capture energy from the grid when it is cheaper and sell it at times of high demand. They help reduce consumption peaks and provide stability to the electricity system.

 What are stationary storage batteries?

The stationary batteriesalso known as stationary batteriesare characterized by their distribution in several independent vessels. Unlike traditional lead-acid batteries, stationary batteries offer higher quality and durability. They are designed for long-term energy storage applications and are always kept charged thanks to a regulator that feeds the consumption. This minimizes internal self-discharge and ensures that they are ready for use when needed.

Stationary battery technologies

Stationary batteries can be divided into several models:

  1. Stationary OpzV Batteries: These are batteries of absorbed electrolyte. They do not require periodic maintenance and are ideal for photovoltaic applications because of their long service life.
  2. Stationary OpzS Batteries: They are also made of liquid electrolyte, but require periodic checks of their internal sulfuric acid levels. Although they require maintenance, they offer good performance.
  3. TOPzS Stationary Batteries: Similar to OpzS, these liquid electrolyte batteries also require maintenance, but provide easier replacement in case of failure.

Benefits and advantages

Stationary batteries offer multiple advantages:

  1. Long life: Their deep discharge cycles make them ideal for daily consumption in photovoltaic systems.
  2. High operating capacity: They work well at slower loading and unloading rates.
  3. Ease of replacement: In case of damage, they can be replaced without hassle.
  4. Electrolyte reserve: They store amounts of energy and supply it at a constant power.
