The Role of Energy Managers in the Sustainable Transition: Strategic Decisions for the Incorporation and Adoption of Photovoltaic Power

The decision to incorporate an energy manager in a company may depend on several factors, such as the size of the company, the sector in which it operates, the intensity of its energy consumption and its sustainability objectives. The  key considerations in determining when a company should consider this role are:

Company Size

  1. Large companies:
    • High Energy Consumption: Companies with large production plants, data centers, or multiple facilities tend to have significant energy consumption, which justifies the need for an energy manager.
    • Sustainability Investment: Companies with sufficient resources to invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects can benefit from specialized energy leadership.
  2. Medium-sized companies:
    • Rapid Growth: Expanding companies that anticipate an increase in their energy consumption may need an energy manager to manage growth in a sustainable manner.
    • Commitment to Sustainability: Midsize companies seeking to differentiate themselves through their commitment to sustainability and social responsibility may consider this role.
  3. Small Businesses:
    • Operational Efficiency: Although less common, some small businesses in energy-intensive sectors may need an energy manager to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Business Sector

  1. Manufacturing and Industry. High Energy Requirements: Sectors such as manufacturing, mining, steel and cement have very high energy consumption and benefit significantly from specialized energy management.
  2. Technology and Data Centers. Continuous Operations: Technology companies and data centers that operate 24/7 have constant and high energy consumption, making energy optimization crucial.
  3. Construction and Real Estate. Sustainable Development: Companies in construction and real estate development may require an energy manager to implement sustainable construction and energy efficiency practices in new projects.
  4. Trade and Services. Multiple Locations: Large retail chains and service companies with multiple locations may need an energy manager to standardize and optimize energy use throughout their facilities.

Additional Considerations

  1. Sustainability Objectives: Companies with strong sustainability commitments and objectives, regardless of size or sector, can justify the need for an energy manager to lead these efforts.
  2. Regulations and Standards: Companies in regions with strict environmental and energy regulations may need an energy manager to ensure compliance and avoid penalties.
  3. Competitiveness and Reputation: Competitive pressure and the need to maintain a good corporate reputation can drive companies to adopt specialized energy roles.

Energy managers are essential catalysts in the transition to a more sustainable energy model, strategically leading the way towards efficiency and environmental responsibility within their companies.

These leaders play several key roles in driving the shift to more sustainable and efficient energy sources:

  1. Strategy and Planning: Energy managers are responsible for developing and executing strategies that promote the use of renewable energy, energy efficiency and carbon emission reductions in their companies. This includes the evaluation of emerging technologies and the implementation of policies that encourage sustainable practices.
  2. Resource Management: Manage the company’s energy resources efficiently, optimizing consumption and seeking opportunities to reduce costs through more energy-efficient practices.
  3. Innovation and Technology: Promote research and adoption of new energy technologies, such as energy storage, distributed generation and intelligent energy management solutions.
  4. Regulatory Compliance: Ensures that the company complies with current environmental and energy regulations, preparing it for future stricter regulatory requirements.
  5. Education and Awareness: Education and Awareness: train employees on sustainable energy practices and promote a corporate culture that values sustainability and environmental responsibility.
  6. External Relations: Maintain relationships with government agencies, NGOs and other stakeholders to influence public policies favorable to the energy transition and to participate in collaborative initiatives.
  7. Reporting and Transparency: Regularly report on energy performance and progress towards sustainability goals, ensuring transparency and accountability to shareholders and the community at large.

The choice of photovoltaic energy as the main energy source in a company by the energy manager must be based on a series of strategic, technical, economic and environmental considerations. In addition to evaluating other renewable energy sources such as wind, biomass or hydroelectric, and determining which is most suitable for the specific conditions of the company. In addition, special attention needs to be paid to the integration with existing systems and the ease of integration of solar energy with the company’s energy systems.
